Israel’s election offers Europe little prospect of a quick reset, analysts say

Europe’s pressure on Israel is increasingly tied to Gaza, settlements and Palestinian statehood, limiting the prospect that political turnover alone can restore relations.

The Lead

Israel votes on October 27 with relations across Europe under mounting strain, but analysts interviewed by Al Jazeera said a change of government alone would not resolve disputes over Gaza, West Bank settlements and Palestinian statehood.

Key Facts

  • Israel’s 26th Knesset election is officially scheduled for October 27.
  • Proposed EU trade and Horizon Europe restrictions still require sufficient Council support.
  • Centrist challenger Gadi Eisenkot has opposed the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Article Body

European criticism has broadened beyond diplomatic statements to sanctions against violent settlers and proposals affecting trade and research cooperation. EU foreign ministers meeting on October 12 also expressed deep concern about Gaza’s humanitarian conditions and demanded rapid, safe and unimpeded aid access.

However, the bloc remains divided. An October European Parliament research briefing said proposals to suspend trade provisions of the EU-Israel Association Agreement or restrict Israel’s participation in Horizon Europe had not secured the required Council support.

A government without Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could produce a less confrontational diplomatic tone, analysts told Al Jazeera. Yet Eisenkot’s opposition to Palestinian statehood illustrates why replacing the governing coalition would not automatically remove the policies driving European criticism. Israel’s campaign has instead centred largely on security, living costs, military conscription and accountability for the October 7, 2023, attacks.

The consequential question is whether the election produces measurable policy change, rather than only a change in Israel’s diplomatic presentation.

What to Watch

The decisive signal will be whether the next coalition pairs softer diplomacy with concrete changes, particularly on settlement expansion, humanitarian access and a political path for Palestinians.
