Focal Brief

French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo on October 29 urged an end to the controversy surrounding France captain Kylian Mbappé, saying the Real Madrid forward had apologised and had not intended to cause offence in China.

Focal Facts

  • Mbappé issued his apology on October 27.
  • Real Madrid and La Liga also apologised.
  • Three Chinese companies ended agreements with Mbappé.
  • China Media Group suspended La Liga broadcasts.

Focal Point

The decisive signal is whether Chinese broadcasters restore La Liga and Real Madrid coverage. Resumption would indicate that Mbappé’s apology and subsequent statements from his club and league have contained the institutional fallout.

Diallo told Ouest-France that Mbappé had explained the context and apologised, adding that the matter should be left there so the forward could continue his season under normal conditions.

The dispute followed circulation of a podcast clip in which Mbappé discussed a meme placing his face on an image of Mao Zedong and referred to the person depicted as a “Chinese dictator.” Mbappé said on October 27 that the remark was ill-judged and apologised to people it had upset.

The repercussions extended beyond the player. Beverage producer Dongpeng, dairy company Mengniu and cheese maker Milkground ended agreements with him, according to the Associated Press. China Media Group suspended broadcasts of La Liga matches and games involving Mbappé, while the China Football Association lodged a protest with Real Madrid. The club and La Liga subsequently apologised; China’s Foreign Ministry said it took Mbappé’s apology seriously.

The next consequential question is whether the broadcast suspension is lifted or becomes a longer-term commercial rupture.
