WFP cuts monthly food aid for 500,000 people in Gaza
The UN agency has reduced recipients, rations, hot meals and cash support as fragile food-security gains face a new funding shock before winter.
The Lead
The World Food Programme said on October 19 that funding shortages had forced it to withdraw monthly food assistance from about 500,000 people in Gaza, reducing its October reach by nearly one-third as winter approaches.
Key Facts
- Monthly recipients in Gaza fell from 1.6 million in September to 1.1 million in October.
- Family rations were halved to one parcel and a smaller flour bag; WFP-funded hot meals dropped from 250,000 to 150,000 daily.
- WFP says it needs $450 million for Gaza and West Bank operations through March 2027.
Article Body
WFP said it received less than half as much funding for its Palestine operation in 2026 as in previous years. Beyond removing 500,000 people from monthly support, it reduced cash assistance for 75,000 families and cut daily hot meals by 100,000. People in hard-to-reach areas, including communities near the line marking Israeli military control, will receive meals every other day rather than daily.
The agency continues to support bakeries supplying about one-third of Gaza’s bread needs, nutrition programmes for 300,000 women and children, and school snacks for 200,000 children.
WFP estimates 1.4 million people — 67 percent of Gaza’s population — face crisis-level food insecurity or worse, including about 200,000 in emergency conditions. An October 15 UN humanitarian report had already recorded declining meal production and rotational distributions because of funding constraints.
The next consequential question is whether donors act quickly enough to reverse the cuts before worsening winter conditions place further pressure on food and shelter operations.
What to Watch
The decisive signal is whether donors close WFP’s $450 million six-month funding gap. New commitments could restore assistance; continued shortfalls could deepen reductions during Gaza’s winter.
