Focal Brief

Bayern Munich beat 1. FC Magdeburg 6-1 on October 28 to reach the DFB-Pokal last 16, as Harry Kane was honoured for winning the Ballon d’Or and head coach Vincent Kompany was confirmed to have left hospital.

Focal Facts

  • Michael Olise scored twice; Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies, Nathaniel Brown and David Santos Daiber added Bayern’s other goals.
  • Mateusz Zukowski briefly levelled for second-tier Magdeburg before Bayern pulled clear in front of 75,000 spectators.
  • Kane, who won the Ballon d’Or on October 26, was rested and remained an unused substitute.

Focal Point

Bayern produced six goals from five players without using Kane and with Danks directing the side, making their ability to preserve that depth and structure the key signal before Borussia Dortmund’s October 31 visit.

Olise opened the scoring after 10 minutes, but Magdeburg responded through Zukowski five minutes later. Saibari restored Bayern’s lead before halftime, and Olise converted a penalty early in the second half. Davies, Brown and teenager Daiber completed the rout.

Kane watched from the bench after receiving a guard of honour from his teammates. UEFA named the England captain the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner two days earlier.

Danks again deputised for Kompany, who collapsed while attending a Bayern reserve-team training session on October 23. Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said before the cup tie that Kompany had been discharged and would recover at home. No return date has been set, and Danks said on October 30 that Kompany would remain absent against Dortmund.

Bayern’s next consequential test is whether the same attacking depth and tactical continuity survive a sharper examination without their head coach.
